News just emerged that last week Simon Barnes passed away at the age of 52. Barnes was best known for his role as the Tinky Winky actor in the iconic kid’s show, “Teletubbies.”
Before Barnes got into acting, he was a dancer and choreographer. When he was given the opportunity to replace actor Dave Thompson on the popular kid’s show, however, he switched to acting.
He said, “I started my career as a ballet dancer and had just started working as a choreographer. I thought it was a bit of a risky move but it certainly paid off. We used to receive a lot of fan mail from kids and parents. I suppose we were a bit like the Beatles or that Take That of children’s television.”
Barnes was beloved my many, not only because of the joy he brought to thousands of children through his acting. He was also loved for his joyful spirit and genuine kindness.
His family members spoke up about his early death.
Barnes’ niece, “Inbetweeners” actress Emily Atack, said, “My wonderful uncle Simon Barnes has been taken from us all so suddenly. The kindest and most talented man you could ever wish to meet. Loved by all who knew him, and will be forever. X.”
Barnes’ daughter said, “I love you so much Dad…always have, always will. The most beautiful man in the world.”
Barnes’ actor son Henry said, “I lost my lovely dad on Wednesday, he was the kindest and most gentle man I knew and I love him more than anything!!!!”
He continued, “I always used to be embarrassed as a child that he was a dancer and an actor but now I couldn’t be more proud!
He is in a better place now and I know he wouldn’t want me to be sad, so I’m going to live my life the way he would want me to.”
Sadly, Barnes passed away only four days after his 52nd birthday. So far, no reports have been given about the cause of his death.
According to Independent, the funeral for Simon Barnes will take place on February 7. In honor of his colorful and joyful life, attendees are being asked to wear bright colors in his memory.
